No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies, how fast underwriting moves, and what happens if you need more testing.

Many carriers offer fast-track underwriting: for applicants within age and amount parameters, they use the application, Rx history, driving history and other sources instead of an exam. Some say yes in one day. Each quote shows whether an exam is required, possibly required, or not required.

What it changes

Skipping the exam is not the same as skipping underwriting. The carrier confirms your answers, and a policy based on incorrect statements can be denied in the first two years. The carrier may still request an exam or labs if questions come up; you can stop at that point.

Who tends to qualify

Usually people under about 60 seeking coverage amounts within the carrier's accelerated limit, with no serious health issues and no nicotine in 12+ months. Some carriers take recent blood tests from a doctor visit instead of requiring an exam.

If an exam is necessary, it's typically a 20- to 30-minute home or office visit by a paramedic in the Martinez area, free to you. Good results can bump you to a better rate category, so don't assume an exam is negative.
